To paraphrase the OP's assertion, *$'s main appeal is said to come from its welcoming environment and luxo drinks, all of which gives its customers the warm and fuzzy. However, to put my own spin on it, *$ did several things that were new to most people at the time: They found a way to sell sweet, caffeinated milkshakes to people who never liked espresso. America found a new way to get fat. They provided upscale furnishings and decor, along with a gift shop boutique atmosphere to justify the higher price everyone had to pay. They ruthlessly oversaturated every location, while buying-out the leases of their mom and pop competition, necessitating them to operate the franchise at a loss for much longer than a typical coffee shop. This heavy-handed strategy allowed the giant to grow unimpeded, while steadily building a loyal customer base.
And that's all past history. It made *$ successful, initially, and still works in some newer markets. Thanks
